Q & A - The Carpet Cleaners assured me the Pet urine will be GONE!

I have heard to seal the floors you paint them, but the tip here to use KILZ and then apply it in separate steps is a really good tip to consider. Note that sometimes the carpet clean job can make the smell worse at first. So can opening the windows after a room has been shut closed a long time.

Q & A - The Carpet Cleaners assured me the Pet urine will be GONE!

Pet Urine smells

I know you have suggested replacing the carpet, but the carpet cleaners assured me the enzymes they clean the carpet with will completely eliminate the odor.    They have promised to come back if the smell should return.

My seller had contracted this carpet cleaner prior to my knowledge and paid almost $500 for this service.   Granted, this carpet cleaner returned to the home four different times, yet the strong pet urine smell still hovers in the air.     There are times where the Seller is used to the smell, and cannot detect these smells.  Buyers with no pets can detect these smells even after many enzyme processes.

Do yourself a favor, and call someone to give you an estimate for new carpet, and apply that $500 to the installation.   Remember, the pet urine has gone through the carpet, pad and has permeated the wood flooring and the need to seal the floor is imperative.   KILZ works well, but you need at least two coats.   This will require the carpet & pad to be removed, then do a coat one day, let it dry and do another the next day to be sure it seals the flooring.    Carpet installers will not do this for the homeowner and will charge extra to remove the carpet/pad and return for the installation of the new carpet.

Save that $500 and apply it to new carpet - less stress and a faster sale!

Excellent post to share. Pet odors are the worst and can cause a buyer to walk away quickly. Sometimes replacing carpet is the only option.
