One thing that makes a photo of this type more effective is to have a blurred background which makes the main theme stand out. The technical term for this blurred background is bokeh. You will see it used in professional portrait photography 95% of the time. The idea in that genre is to focus attention on the person being presented and not let the viewer become distracted by the surroundings.

You can learn to create this style of photograph by Googling the model of your camera and the terms "how to create bokeh or blurred background with (insert model of your camera here)

There are hundreds of posts and videos which will teach you all the photo techniques you would care to learn. I go to Youtube, since I prefer to see it being done rather than reading about it.

Thanks for the reblog Cheryl. I not only learned about the blurring of the background, I have a way to research my own camera.

Very nice Cheryl.  I bet this blurred background would be amazing on certain house photos as well.

I have found that when I use one of the auto setting that only focuses in the center of my image, it is sharp and the background is slightly less in focus.  Love the photo.
