I like the origin of Father's day explaiNed in this post. It is interesting how long it took before the Holiday took off. It is one of my favorites. It is one of the last few weekends before the heat sets in for a Hot Southern Maryland Summer.
The United States is one of the few countries to honor fathers. The origin of Father's day is all over the place. The strongest claim comes from Spokane, Washington. Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a Mother's Day sermon at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church. This inspired her to have a special day to honor her father.
Her father, William Jackson Smart, He was a veteran of the Civil War. He also raised six children without a mother. His wife died young. To celebrate her Dad she held the first Father's Day on June 19, 2010. This was his birthday. Father's Day did not take off. In 1913 a bill was introduced trying to make the day official. The idea was supported by President Wodrow Wilson in 1916. In 1924 it was supported by President Calvin Coolidge. It wasn't until 1972 before it was supported by Congress. President Richard Nixon established the third Sunday of June as Father's Day.
Happy Father's Day.
