What a great observation. I was at Starbucks twice yesterday in stores an hour apart. Another observation is that they are iPad and iPhone ready. I pulled out my iPhone and the Starbucks Folks guided me though the scanning steps. Next time I lose my Gold Card, I do not have to wait a few weeks for one to be mailed. My iPhone is right in hand!
For many consultations I will meet buyers at local, independent coffee shops or at good ol' Starbucks. Today, as I was driving to the Starbucks located in Orenco Station in Hillsboro to chat with some first time buyers, I had a thought:
Starbucks Doesn't Give Discounts
McDonalds will offer their coffee beverages with coupons for a "free" cup with a meal deal purchase ALL THE TIME. There's some coffee shops that will have a 2-fer deal. But very, very, very rarely will Starbucks offer a deal, or a discount or a coupon for 10% off, or a reduction in price.
Why doesn't Starbucks give discounts?
Because they don't have to.
They offer a product, they price the product and consumers either enter the Starbucks establishment and order a Tall Mocha Coconut Frappuccino with a shot of espresso, or a Venti Non-fat no foam no water 6 pump extra hot chai tea latte, or a Grande sugar-free non-fat vanilla latte with whipped cream . . . or they don't.
And I'm so glad I had that thought because I was prepared. In the event that the folks I was meeting with would ask for a discount, kick-back, rebate I was going to ask them: "When was the last time you got one from Starbucks?"
