Home Shopping Is A Lot Like Dating

I have thought about this concept many times before but never put it in writing!

While working as a Buyer's Agent in Colorado Springs, I have shown countless homes to a number of people. I am always struck by how similar the process of home shopping is to looking for that perfect mate.

This is what I mean:

  • First, you narrow down the potentials to look at. You will know what you are basically looking for in the beginning. For example, you want 3 bedrooms 2 baths and it must be on one level. So, that eliminates a lot of the options. You do the same when you are dating. You know what you want- Tall, dark, handsome, and a great sense of humor, right?
  •

  • Next, you go out looking at homes. Some of the homes have deal-breakers for you right when you walk in. If you can't stand that popcorn ceiling and you didn't see it in the pictures,  you may not want a second look at this home. Similarly, the same thing happens in dating. You go out with Mr. Tall, dark and handsome only to find out that he is a smoker. You hate smoke. Deal Breaker.
  •

  • Another example is what I call "That Feeling." Have you ever walked into a house and had the feeling you were "HOME." Did you ever see a buyer "Fall in Love" with a home. I have. It never gets old for me.  I relate this to having incredible chemistry with someone or to "Love at First Sight."
  • When you are dating, you don't ever want to "settle" for someone. The same can be said with a home. You also may find that the perfect home (or mate) was not anything like what you were looking for originally. The buyer that wants a 3 car garage with no exceptions will sometimes fall in love with a home that has a 2 car garage. Likewise, Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome that you end up falling in love with may not be that funny- or that tall- or that dark...you get it.

One thing is for certain whether you are looking for a mate or for a home. You won't find perfection. You will, however, usually get the "gut feeling" that lets you know when it is right.

One of the main differences between dating and home shopping is this-You don't really "Marry" a home. If you don't like it, you can always get out of it and maybe even make some money in the process.  Oh wait- some people do that when they marry, too.

Just some observations from a Colorado Springs Match Maker  Buyer's Agent.
