Know The Warning Signs Of A Stroke...You Could Save A Loved One's Life...
Last Night I Did

Saturday started out beautifully. A normal day, when I am not showing property, of some honey do lists for us both, phone calls for me, etc and then it was time to get ready for our trek across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to my oldest daughters for a cookout that afternoon. That is when I noticed my husband seemed Know the signs of a strokequieter than normal. He seemed himself at the cookout so I did not think anymore about it.

That evening, a few hours after we returned home, he said to me his arm felt numb. I asked if he had been leaning on it and maybe it went to sleep. He didn't think so. When he went to stand up and walk he was very dizzy and then I noticed he was not speaking too clearly. He wanted to go lay down. Just as quickly as he was feeling bad he started to feel better but I called 911 anyway.

Today at the hospital I was told he had a mini stroke called a transient ischemic attack or TIA. This is a warning type of stroke that is telling you something is wrong somewhere. A clot or blockage has formed and needs to be fixed. For Jim it was his carotid artery on the left side of his neck. He will be seeing a vascular surgeon about correcting the problem upon his release from the hospital.

Jim had three of the five systems of a stroke and though this was a mini stroke with no lasting damage it could have been a full blown stroke where brain damage occurred. the warning signs are the same for both.

It is so important to remember that no matter how short the systems last or how few of the systems someone has it is important to call 911. If I had not we would have never known that his carotid artery was blocked and the next attack could have been a full blown stroke with lasting damage.
