NOT another discussion on the merits of social media!!! NO - just some facts

I like the concept that social media is a process, not an event.

As I read more and more discussions about the value of social media I felt compelled to take a minute and share something with you here in the rain.

We’ve been bantering whether or not social media is a waste of time, a sink hole, a fad, you name it it’s been said, written about, hashed and re-hashed.  But are we being so nearsighted that we aren’t watching what other industries are doing?

Since getting into real estate almost a decade ago I’ve been enthralled watching REALTORS® keep following EACH OTHER.  From day one we each keep doing the same thing over and over.  I’m not sure that it ever occurred to us that we could probably learn something from folks outside of our industry?

I don’t know where I found this report but I’m glad I did.  It has changed my thinking about all the chatter I’m hearing.  This report was done by Ben Elowitz, CEO Wetpaint and Charlene Li, Partner at Altimeter Group to delve into the true financial value of SM.  It was written in July of this year.

Elowitz & Li decided to take a good hard look at what companies (big and small) were doing to stave off the effects of the recession we’ve been in.  What did they find?  That social media IS an indispensible marketing tool.  They concluded that “the most valuable brands in the world are experiencing a direct correlation between top financial performance and deep social media engagement”.  They go on to say; engaged companies are in fact more financially successful.Success in 2010

Seth Godin wrote the other day that the reason social media is so difficult for most organizations (and I’ll add people) is that “it’s a process, NOT an EVENT. Events are easier to pay for and get excited about.  Processes build results for the long haul.” They take more time, planning and commitment.

So is that the reason for all the discord?  We are too impetuous to take the time needed.  Processes don’t happen overnight.  Neither does any ROI with SM…

So if you have a few minutes I encourage you to read the report.  It’s called the:

ENGAGEMENTdb Report

Here’s to a very successful 2010 to all my friends here in the Rain.  May you find your sweet spot in social media!
