May I Bring My Pet to Thanksgiving Dinner?

I am looking forward to some walks with Riley Rover over the Holidays! Even though my pup is family, he stays home during turkey and stuffing celebrations. Not everyone would find his antics as adorable as his Mom does. Not to mention he might tear off to chase a deer! Oh dear!

May I Bring My Pet to Thanksgiving Dinner?

It happens that adoring pet owners want to include their beloved animals in the Thanksgiving Festivities. Even sometimes they don't want to leave their furry friends home alone. So they might just ask the question, May I bring my pet to Thanksgiving Dinner?

We have no pets at our house and when we have a crowd we don't have room for pets. I remember having invited some friends to dinner a few years ago and they asked if they could bring their two dogs. The dog owners said they would keep them outside and since we would be doing outside activities we agreed. These were friendly and smart dogs that would behave. In this situation it wasn't a problem but it did surprise me.

But when it comes to inside dinners, bigger crowds and traditional get togethers, pets are not included in the dinner invitation. I know many families have an open door policy for pets and may even rather see the pets than the owners. Well that is okay if they are comfortable with that. However, think about your other guests as well and whether they would want to be celebrating with pets around. And some people are allergic to pets so it could create problems.

By all means ask the host first. Don't assume someone wants to include you and your pets for dinner. Please don't be offended if the answer is no. Many hosts may think you are pretty bold asking in the first place.
